Concerned Citizen for
University Heights
Hi
Everyone,
The
new
mission statement
was approved at our March Meeting.
It is
listed below. We
also invited Council
Steven Sims to give us
a presentation on the budget at the March meeting as
well. It was
very
informative. He
noted that he felt the largest increase in
the
budget was for personnel costs.
During our discussion, he noted
that the
largest part of that increase
was due to an anomaly that
occurs every 12 years that results in one extra pay
period in the
year. Even with
this
unusual expense, the Mayor’s budget showed
a surplus of over $200,000.
However,
personnel costs are certainly
something that the Mayor and Council will be looking at during this
year.
We
continue
to have
representatives at most Council and Council
committee meetings. If
we cannot attend, we are getting the audio
files so we can listen to what is occurring.
There are a number of
ongoing issues that we
are actively pursuing
information on so that
we can share it with you.
Please check back monthly since I will be
trying
to update everyone on these items on a more regular basis.
Our
next
meeting will be Wednesday June 2nd at 7 pm. We will
meet
in the
Leavy Room of the Main
Branch of the Cleveland Heights
University
Heights Library on Lee
Road.
Please mark your calendars and make plans to
attend. We have two
items on the agenda
that have been requested by members. The
first
is Senior Services and the
potential creation of Senior Service
Department.
The second is McDonald’s.
Thank you
Pat Baskin

A Brief
History of Concerned Citizens
The
group formed in September of 2008 when a group of
residents came together
out of concerns about city council’s formation of a Charter
Review Commission. The
group expressed concerns to council through co-conveners
Sarah Wilder and Katie
Uhlir regarding the makeup of the Commission and how it
was composed. Members
continued to attend all of the Commission meetings and became
highly concerned
over the proposal to add a City Administrator and diminish the
power of the Mayor.
Concerned Citizens then focused on providing information to
the community about
the proposal in a variety of ways. In November of 2009, six
of the proposed charter
amendments were defeated including the addition of a
City Administrator. he
group
decided to
remain together to continue to observe governmental initiatives in
University
Heights and to disseminate this information to the residents. Concerned
Citizens welcomes the participation of residents of University Heights
in its
meetings.
Pat Baskin currently serves as the Chairperson for the group.
